On January 3rd, 2006 the amendment titled the “Edward O. Hawkins and Thomas C. Slater Medical Marijuana Act” came into effect. This act repeals criminal penalties on the cultivation, use, and possession at the state-level by any patient that has a written or oral physician recommendation which affirms the fact that he/she suffers from some form of a debilitating illness or condition and that in the opinion of the physician “Might benefit from the medicinal use of marijuana.”. Illnesses that qualify for a medicinal marijuana card in Rhode Island include: Epilepsy, Chron’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Glaucoma, HIV/Aids, Cancer, chronic pain, and other debilitating conditions/illnesses. These however are not the only qualifying illnesses however so please contact a qualified physician or the Rhode Island Department of Health to see if you qualify to become a medicinal marijuana patient. RHODE ISLAND’S MEDICINAL MARIJUANA LAWS DO CONTAIN RECIPROCITY PROVISIONS SO YOUR MEDICAL CARD FROM ANOTHER STATE WILL PROTECT YOU UNDER RHODE ISLAND’S MEDICAL MARIJUANA LAWS SO LONG AS YOU STAY WITHIN THEIR GUIDELINES.

Qualified patients or their caregiver are allowed to possess at the maximum 2 ½  ounces of medical cannabis, and are legally permitted to cultivate up to 12 MATURE cannabis plants. Caregivers are allowed in Rhode Island. Said caregiver is required to be at least 21 years of age. Caregiver may not assist any more than five qualified patients at one time.

To Acquire Your Medical License in Rhode Island:

Contact a doctor who is licensed to practice in the State of Rhode Island to receive the “Attending Practitioner Statement” and have said physician complete and sign form. Next fill out the Registration for Medical Marijuana Program New Applicant form. Lastly include a money order or check for $75.00 to RI General Treasurer. If you are receiving Disability or Supplemental Security the fee will be reduced to $10, you must provide satisfactory evidence of this along with application.

Mail the applications, physicians statement, and fee to:
